WHDH Boston Upgrades its Broadcast Operations with Solid State Logic System T
Boston, Massachusetts — Sunbeam-owned WHDH Boston has installed Solid State Logic’s latest generation of dedicated broadcast audio production system at its facility, replacing an SSL C100 console that had been in continuous operation for nearly 14 years. The new System T comprises a Tempest T25 256-path processing engine and a three-bay, 48-fader S500 control surface, complete with meter bridge.
“The C100 was fine and it met our needs, but it was coming up on its fourteenth birthday,” says Jim Shultis, Director of Engineering for WHDH-TV, where he has worked for well over 25 years.
“The C100 has been a fantastic workhorse, but it was time to replace it and get on SSL’s current platform which is fully Dante compatible.”When WHDH lost its NBC affiliation at the end of 2016 the station announced that it would begin airing more than 80 hours of news every week — an increase from eight or nine hours per day. As engineering assistant Art Murphy explains, the new System T platform offers features and facilities that were attractive to a station offering so much news programming, such as the easy creation of mix-minuses for IFBs to the 7News talent in the field and in the studio.

Solid State Logic System T Consoles Installed at NBCUniversal Six-Studio Complex in BostonSystem T consoles are ST 2110-30 ready and incorporate latest Dante AoIP technology
Executives from NBCUniversal together with state, city and local officials attended a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new $125 million NBCUniversal Boston Media Center, located at the Needham Crossing Business Park, on February 26, 2020. Five Solid State Logic System T AoIP-networked audio mixing consoles handle all facets of broadcast audio production at the six-studio complex, which was designed and built on a SMPTE ST 2110 IP backbone.
The NBCU Boston Media Center houses six 2,400-sq.-ft. studios. Three dedicated studios serve NBC10 Boston, Telemundo Boston and NECN. NBC Sports Boston’s Studios 4 and 5 are combined into a single 4,800-sq.-ft. space. Studio 6 is a flexible space accommodating town hall meetings and other special presentations. There are six corresponding control rooms, plus a dedicated podcast studio. More than 60 broadcast service panels and over 90 channels of wireless microphones enable productions to broadcast from locations throughout the 160,000-sq.-ft. facility.
SSL’s System T, which is ST 2110-30 ready, comprises Tempest-based processors and a routing and I/O system incorporating Dante AoIP technology offering complete AES67 compliance. The system may be flexibly networked with a variety of hardware control interfaces, from touch screen terminals and remote hardware panels to large-format modular consoles.

Solid State Logic (SSL) announce the latest V2.3 System T broadcast production platform release, adding significant benefits to the entire range of System T consoles; S500, S500m, S300 and TCR. Relied the world over for live broadcast, event space audio, recording and postproduction duties, this latest feature-rich release adds significant enhancements including; DAW control, Immersive audio, Dynamic Automation, Patch Manager CSV files, Access Control, Event Manager, Scene Automation and fully featured on-board FX rack.
Alongside the System T V2.3 release, the Network I/O V4.0 update includes ST 2110, ST 2059-2 and ST 2022-7 support for all devices, providing standards based AoIP and Dante technology simultaneously on the same chipsets. This allows installations to leverage IP networks for both infrastructure and consoles-based audio routing workflows, without proprietary hardware TDM routers, and adds support for TSL UMDv5 providing the audio operator with accurate information about the source currently presented on each fader.
An additional tone inject on the channel input provides simple signal path checking, while a new per path talkback inject for channel and bus direct outputs enhances communications switching and conferencing. A Backfeed feature with mix minus assignment places the controls of a Mix Minus return bus directly on the incoming outside source channel. Greatly simplifying operation for complex external line control, without the need to navigate to other layers or other systems. Cue and Auto Cue further simplify communication with outside and remote sources, greatly reducing the console operator’s tasks during broadcasts with complex remote feeds.
