Nineteentwenty launches TV and film VFX department

Jake Bickerton

VFX house Nineteentwenty, which has previously focused on providing visual effects services for brands, agencies and production companies in advertising, has expanded its focus to TV and film VFX.

The London and Bristol-based company’s new Film and Episodic VFX Department is headed up by James Etherington-Sparks, who joins Nineteentwenty as head of VFX, and Emma Ibbetson, who joins as head of production (both are pictured above).

While at MPC, Etherington-Sparks recently delivered VFX on Slow Horses Season 2 as overall supervisor. His other recent credits include VFX supervisor on The Gentlemen, The Dig and The Two Popes while at Union VFX.

Ibbetson joins from Territory Studio where she was senior VFX producer and her credits included Mank for David Fincher/Netflix and The 355. She was previously head of production at One Of Us, where she worked on Under the Skin, Anna Karenina, Mirror Mirror, Cloud Atlas, and Selfish Giant.

Nineteentwenty’s new department has been created in response to growing requests it’s received from the likes of Disney for film and episodic content. The department builds on the company’s work on Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery and Killing Eve.

A company spokesperson said: “We couldn’t be more excited to have James and Emma on board as they offer our Film & Episodic clients a wealth of experience. We intend to focus our expansion plans over the coming year by giving them all the support they need.”

  • The atmosphere at MPTS has been amazing this year. MPTS is definitely one of the industry’s most diverse shows, if not the most diverse, both in terms of attendees and panelists. A huge amount of work goes into making sure that there is equal representation across an extensive conference programme.

  • I think this year 2024 is probably the most innovative, cutting-edge, head-of-the-curve MPTS that I’ve exhibited at so far. I think even compared to last year, attendees really know what they’re looking for when it comes to cloud, AI, virtual production, all of the buzz words, all of the emerging technologies, everyone’s really embraced it.
