dock10 launches free virtual production guides

Guides aim to help production teams with technology and terminology

dock10 has launched two free guides to virtual production.

The Introductory Guide to Virtual Studios and The Virtual Production Glossary aim to help production teams understand the technology and terminology used in virtual studios production. dock10 has published them having worked with virtual technology on BBC Bitesize, Match of the Day, Euro 2020, and more.

The Introductory Guide to Virtual Studios traces the development of virtual studios, explaining their evolution from physical sets, green screens and the world of computer games. It also explains how virtual studios work in practice and lays out their creative possibilities for programme makers, aiming to give a broad overview.

Meanwhile, The Virtual Production Glossary aims to clear up some of the confusion that surrounds new terms and technology in the sector. For example, it explains the exact difference between virtual studios, virtual production and virtual reality, and what separates Mo-Cap from Mo-Sys.

Andy Waters, head of studios at dock10, said: “It can be daunting when you first experience this exciting new technology. We were inspired to produce the free guides after receiving feedback from creative teams who loved the idea of creating virtual elements in their next production but were struggling to understand the technology’s capabilities and limitations. The free guides are designed to give people confidence to understand how to get the most out of virtual studios.

“There is a major skills gap in production, especially around emerging technology – our way of helping to address this is by providing free resources like the Introductory Guide to Virtual Studios and the Virtual Production Glossary for the wider industry.”

Both guides are free to download from the dock10 website.

  • The atmosphere at MPTS has been amazing this year. MPTS is definitely one of the industry’s most diverse shows, if not the most diverse, both in terms of attendees and panelists. A huge amount of work goes into making sure that there is equal representation across an extensive conference programme.

  • I think this year 2024 is probably the most innovative, cutting-edge, head-of-the-curve MPTS that I’ve exhibited at so far. I think even compared to last year, attendees really know what they’re looking for when it comes to cloud, AI, virtual production, all of the buzz words, all of the emerging technologies, everyone’s really embraced it.
