Autodesk launches Maya Creative

Max Miller
New product aims to be more affordable for smaller facilities

Autodesk has launched Maya Creative, a slightly stripped back version of Maya that aims to be more affordable for smaller VFX facilities.

Creative still includes modelling, animation, rigging, and rendering tools for film, television, and game development, including Maya’s full industry-standard creative toolset: high-end 3D modelling; UV, lookdev, and texturing; motion graphics; animation deformation; camera sequencing; rendering and imaging; and data and scene assembly. It also has Arnold renderer.

It is available on Windows and Mac, and can be purchased through Flex, Autodesk’s pay-as-you-go option for daily product use. It is designed to be a cost-effective option for freelancers, boutique facilities, or small business creative teams, who don’t need the same API access or extensibility required for larger production workflows.

Diana Colella, SVP of media & entertainment at Autodesk, said: “Although they’re increasing, production budgets are not keeping pace with consumer demand, which puts pressure on companies to do more for less.

“As larger facilities enlist freelance artists and boutique VFX houses to scale workload capacity, there is more demand for affordable industry-standard tools. For studios to compete, creativity and efficiency are paramount.”

  • The atmosphere at MPTS has been amazing this year. MPTS is definitely one of the industry’s most diverse shows, if not the most diverse, both in terms of attendees and panelists. A huge amount of work goes into making sure that there is equal representation across an extensive conference programme.

  • I think this year 2024 is probably the most innovative, cutting-edge, head-of-the-curve MPTS that I’ve exhibited at so far. I think even compared to last year, attendees really know what they’re looking for when it comes to cloud, AI, virtual production, all of the buzz words, all of the emerging technologies, everyone’s really embraced it.
